ROCK PLATFORM/SAND DUNES

Long Reef Rock Platform & Collaroy Beach, Collaroy
Excursion Synopsis
Students examine fossils and their modern equivalents, including a fossil search at the base of Long Reef Headland and a rock platform animal capture to identify and discuss animal adaptations, linking to ancestral past.
At Collaroy beach students examine global and local geomorphic hazards, weather patterns (such as east-coast lows) and climate change impacts on coastal areas, with real life scenearios and historical storm damage a key focus of the day. Sand mining as a resource, the implications of its unsustainable acquisition is presented as a case study.
